St Johns: Day 1 - Ocean Science Centre, The Rooms, and Fish and Chips Mecca (According to Some)

 Aug 10, 2024

Woke to a dreary day, but no complaints with these views

There was a lot of activity at the trailhead and some cheering on the road to the Ocean Science Centre.
It was the St Johns’ Joy Run - a 50 km ultra marathon. This does not scream joy to me
Turns out those cool buildings above are the Marine Lab, and the Ocean Science Centre is a few tanks with students from the University giving explanations. Since we were the only ones there we (I, Matthew isn’t fond of things without a skeletal structure) got to hold everything and we had a great interaction with the two students.

I had no idea sea urchins moved their “spikes”
A sea raspberry - a type of soft coral

A 3 year old lobster - the size of a crayfish
Sea cucumber
A type of anemone

And since it was dreary we went to the St John’s museum, The Rooms

They had an exhibit about Newfoundland’s participation in WWI and WWII. It was a powerful exhibit and the losses sustained by the Newfoundland troops at Galipoli and the the Somme were horrendous. Their sacrifice compared to their population was extreme. And then there was this.

Charming knitting bag

The Irish persevered and there is a thriving Irish culture and communities on the Island
Another view of the sealers, because it is just astounding what they did to get seals

View of St Johns’ Harbour
Ches’s had been recommended to Matthew by a YouTuber he watches, and by everyone we ran into it seemed. So we had to stop at the mecca. We were disappointed.
But we earned this
Back to our trailhead for the night
