Cape Spear and Ferryland

 Aug 13, 2024 - St Johns - Day 4 - Cape Spear and Beyond

Drove out Cape Spear and finally saw our first moose of this trip!

The old and new Cape Spear Lighthouses
A bunker from WWII
Follow the birds and you’ll find the fishing ship

The inlet of St Johns Harbour and the Citadel up on Signal Hill
Pretty little thing on the walkway that we moved
Canadian Army bunker

Stalactites forming

The red boat is much closer to us - look at the size difference of these fishing vessels. The blue one brings in tons and tons of catch each time

A gannet flying- they are huge!
Cape Spear is the the easternmost point in North America

This is why the guns show before are called disappearing guns
The new Lighthouse that is in use today

The old lighthouse

They may have been isolated but they lived in relative comfort compared to some other lighthouses we have visited. Two families would have lived here, although they would have cobbled on more structures as the need arose.

View from a hill
Stopped at a Thai restaurant for me and loved this swinging bench seat. The server was great and when we told the manager that he asked where we were from. Turns out he is a huge Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes fan. He lived in Labrador for a long time and told us restaurants to go to there that he used to work in.

Then we went to Leo’s so Matthew could try the other play his vlogger mentioned as having the best fish and chips. Mattthew rated theirs superior to Ches’s. Bonus, they had the local-group-made-good on the wall. The band we heard in Quidi Vidi played some of their traditional music and I really liked it.

We said good to St Johns and drove towards Witless Bay
And camped out on the peninsula of Ferryland
Our view - as long as we don’t get blown off this strip of land tonight. The wind is so strong that we didn’t put our top up tonight!
