Woke to a much nicer day and headed to the Avalon Peninsula.
Stopped in Brigus and saw this house being moved to a on the street behind it.
The Brigus Tunnel was commissioned by Captain Robert Bartlett in 1860 to provide easier access to his deep water wharf. A miner built it in 4 months using only black gunpowder as an explosive!
Hand drilled spots for blasting charges.
Capt. Bartlett memorial - he commanded Peary’s artic exploration ships and accompanied him on the North Pole trek
Went on to Burnt Head to hike the trail and came across this sign
This was the waterfall they touted on the trail - it was about 3 feet tall
But the views were lovely
And the rocks were so beautifully colored
And there were blueberries everywhere that I foraged
But the arch, the other draw for this trail, was not a disappointment - at low tide a 17 foot boat can fit through it
This was too funny
Sharks Cove
Stopped at the Cupids Cove Plantation NHS
Where there was an active archeological dig going on.
The Rangers showed us a pipe stem they had found that day - they had just measured the hole in it to determine its age.
Then on to Harbour Grace where the SS Kyle ran aground in a storm after an illustrious decades long service. It would do too much damage to the bottom of the bay if it was removed, so it sits here rusting since 1967.
Amelia Earhart statue - her flight across the Atlantic began here
View from the Carbonear lookout
Charming hang out at Grates Cove
Touted as the Perfect Job Site (for fishing)
An purported site of a John Cabot landing
And this
A man was sitting by his open windo watching us and I asked how he was doing. He replied “Can’t complain, to which Matthew said “I bet you could” and the man’s wife yells out from inside the house “he sure can!” After a good laugh by all the man comes out and chats with Matthew for a bit. They are from Ontario but bough this house 18 years ago for $23,000CA to spend their summers in. He said prices have skyrocketed since. This jawbone was from a whale that washed up nearby.
Next stop New Pelican to see the colorful fish stages
And happened upon these goats
Who were obviously being used to clip the grass
Heart’s Content Cable Station NHS - site of the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable that was landed here in 1866 and was in use until 1965. Unfortunately it was closed by the time we got there
That first message
So we went on to Heart’s Content’s lighthouse where we chatted with a van couple from Quebec who were traveling with their very friendly and curious cat.
Drove past these towns
And on to the town of Dildo and the Dildo Brewing Company
From where we watched a beautiful sunset
And I had excellent fish tacos and meh “chips and gravy”
But Matthew had really good fish and chips
So to recap, there is Hearts Delight, Hearts Desire, Hearts Content, and Dildo on this side of Conception Bay, and Paradise on the other side. Hmm
