Gros Morne - Western Brook Pond Fjord Tour

 Aug 27, 2024

Woke to a very windy day and uncertainty that our tour of Western Brook Pond (a pond is distinguished from a lake only by its name- in Newfoundland pond is the preferred word no matter teh size of the body of water).

Explored “our” beach

There was at least one caribou carcass
And many beautiful stones

Then down the coast to the SS Ethie which wrecked in 1919, but everyone aboard was saved, even a baby who was brought ashore in a mailbag.

More beautiful rocks
And a spring

A piece of copper
Then we hiked the 3kms back to the dock and were in luck that, although windy, they would be going out. This was a serious hiker!
Relieved to see that we were going to be on a different boat
Western Brook Pond was carved by glaciers. It is not a true fjord since it was cut off from the sea and freshwater replaced the salt water.

These trees were decimated by moose, who were introduced to the island in1904. An adult moose will eat 50 pounds of twigs and vegetation in a single day.

Because the area is mostly rock with some areas of thin soil, the water has few nutrients and is extremely clean, and is actually used as drinking water in the dock waiting area.

Pissing Mare Falls - 1.150ft high it’s one of the highest in North America

The cracks formed by the continents moving apart filled with magma, cooling into diabase dykes

A little kitchen party on the return
And Matthew joined in playing the spoons

Then back to the site we stayed last night for another windy night’s sleep
