Digby Neck, Long Island, and Brier Island

 July 11-12, 2024

Thursday was overcast and dreary, which worked since we had to do laundry anyway. Drove to Annapolis for the chore, which was a sweet historic city.

Guinea hens owning the road

Unfortunately we did not see much as we decided not to go the fort and it began to rain so hard that any other outdoor activity was ruled out. We went to a picnic spot near the Tidal generating electrical plant to make lunch.

We decided to spend what was left of the day catching up on all things internet at the Annapolis library while the storm raged.

That turned out to be a good choice as we found huge sinkholes and washed out shoulders once the storm ended and we cautiously made our way to our chosen spot for the night along the St Mary’s Bay.

The morning was foggy, yet again, but we headed down Digby Neck hoping that things would clear up and we’d be able to see the sites. Unfortunately we weren’t able to see much.

Took the free ferry to Long Island

Emerging from the fog

Stopped at the Loyalist cemetery on Outhouse Road. Turns out a large percentage of the headstones were of the Outhouse lineage.

Stopped at the information center/cottage and enjoyed their small display
Huge lobster claw - quarter for perspective
Took the free ferry to Brier Island

Not much here but the basalt formations at the end of the island were interesting. We ate lunch and listed to the seabirds on the tiny rock island in front of us that we couldn’t see for the fog.

The irregular coastline are birds

Fog lifted a bit and you can see the white and black dots of birds
Interesting buildings on the islands

Then back to Long Island
Lobster bouys - every lobster fisherer has their own design/color

Hiked down to Balancing Rock - a basalt cylinder that hasn’t succumbed to the sea yet.

Which required climbing own 247 steps - and then back up them!
Love old seaside buildings

This house is for sale outside of TIverton - 1bd 1ba, 426 sqft - hideously rehabbed - can be yours for $49,500 (look up listing) - which, considering how high real estate has gotten here, is a real deal
Cool fog effect while waiting for ferry
Back on Digby Neck we parked at Sandy Cove and walked the beach before settling in for the night.

Found some bits of sea glass

Watched 5 or 6 seals as they were feeding

  1. Sand toy library is brilliant. And I'd take that house above the yellow one, too ;)
