Birchtown and the Black Loyalists

 July 16, 2024

Happy 36th Anniverssary to us! Woke to a foggy morning in Shelburne

Such a smart design to have an entry that has shutters that can be closed against storms
Here for our anniversary coffee and breakfast

We resisted the temptation to buy this
Matthew declared this the smallest bathroom he has ever been in

Breakfast finished we went to Birchtown and the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre. Birchtown was the home of the Black Loyalists who were promised freedom and land if they aligned with the British in the Revolutionary War. Of course the British thought they’d be ceding them land in the colonies, not here.

Very informative digital interactive displays-things I did not learn in school- a sobering experience

Left Birchtown after grabbing a free hot shower in the provincial park (unlimited hot water in a clean individual room - glorious!) Continued driving down the fogging coast
Stopped at the other Kejimkujik NP but it was so foggy we elected not to hike into it
But a ruffed grouse walked past our van door as we considered
Drove on to Mahone Bay, where the skies were clear

And settled in for the night.
