Copper Harbor, MI - A Lighthouse, a Fort and an Old Growth Forest

August 22-23 Copper Harbor, MI

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse

The assistant lighthouse keepers quarters were in the white building. That and a brown one next to it were floated across the harbor when their previous usage was no longer needed. This is the second lighthouse we've seen that has been relocated rather than tearing down and rebuilding - imagine
The harbor it would have been floated across
3000 lb anchor from the 1800s snagged by another in Lake Superior
5000 lb riveted buoy - all Lake Superior buoys are
removed in the fall and returned in the spring
Steel roller to "pank" snow on the roads
Thimbleberries
Cloudy, and chilly, view from the top of Brockway Mountain
Looking down on Copper Harbor
Found a spot to boondock along a forest road - these were our evening
visitors each night - there were actually 2 adults and several babies

Visited the historic 1844 Fort Wilkins which was built to protect miners' and shipping interests in anticipation that there would be conflict with the local Chippewa and Objibwa tribes. The Fort proved unnecessary and was nly used for a very brief time. This had incredibly well done exhibits.

Opening to an early copper mine

A lovely surprise as many of the other wild flowers are fading

Manganese Falls was a disappointment
Matthew was here with his dad and brothers when he was 18. His most vivid memory was seeing all the bears at this then open dump. Glad for the bears that our understanding of coexistence has changed.

Hiked through the Estivant Pines Wilderness Nature Santuary of old growth forest

Always good to have a clear sign
A VW much like the one Matthew drove from '77 - '84ish
The historic Keweenaw Mountain Lodge
