Aug 19-21, Anchorage - Dena'ina lands
Anchorage is like any other city and didn't hold a lot of interest for us, especially since the clouds were low and the rain was ever-present so you couldn't see the beautiful mountains that surround it. But, as a city, it did offer us a chance to stock up and take care of a few needed chores, such as getting 2 new tires and an oil change. Cabela's parking lot was our nighttime venue each night but one.
Spent some time at the central library with this sculpture and edible garden.
Went for a wet walk in Earthquake Park. Anchorage is across Knik Arm
Signs of autumn
The magnitude 9.2 Good Friday earthquake of 1964 created massive landslides and dropped the land, and the neighborhood on it, about 100 yards
The ground moved, folded up on itself, and dropped in places.
Drove by a lake
It was fun to come across a Wyland mural, something we were so familiar with in Laguna Beach
Had to try the fireweed ice cream at Wild Scoops - it was delicious and slightly berry flavored
One morning walking in the downtown area we came across this park dedicated to victims of violent crime
Had a great breakfast at the very popular Snow City Cafe
A lovely evening at the King Street Brewery, and a night spent in their quiet parking lot before picking Cameron up at the airport tomorrow

ReplyDeleteThanks for a trip down memory lane as I made it up there to sail with Paul on TOTE (totem ocean trailer express) a few times. One of the park murals used to include Paul's ship - The Great Land (now razor blades). Not sure if its still there. I remember how big the cabbages in the parks were this time of year! Ship creek and shoulder to shoulder fly fisherman. The eagles nesting nearby. Humpy's fish sandwiches! Enjoy every moment.
