Inuvik, Great Northern Arts Festival, and a Flat

Monday, July 11 - Inuvik and the Dempsey Hwy

Began our day with a visit to the Inuvik visitor center which had an amazing display of traditional craftwork.

Piece work - each color is a different skin

Whale stomach float for whaling, etc

We wandered through the NorthMart - the everything but groceries store

Saw the largest log building north of the Artic Circle

Midnight Sun Complex - pool, ice rink, gyms, sport fields, community space, the parking lot we stayed in each night in Inuvik, and host of the Great Northern Arts Festival

Met Roy Goose outside our van in the morning, then again at the Festival where he was the videographer. Charming man full of stories. Bought his children's book - Sukaq and the Raven - an Inuit creation story

Traditional story tellers

Artist Jolly Atagoyuk

Musk ox fur - the fork is used to remove the incredibly light and soft under coat.  Tanis, owner of Quviut, Inc (quviut being the name for the fur) showed me her process for taking the fur to making the yarn, and then some of her knitwear.

Town greenhouse

The only polar bear we saw - Inuvik Airport

Heading back down the Dempsey - yellow rimmed pond

Swallows on the ferry

Then this happened

Luckily Matthew was well prepared

Because nobody came by if we weren't

And when we stopped at the Artic Circle rest area for the night we were lucky enough to see this in front of where we were parked
