July 14, Dawson City, Yukon and Top of the World Highway
The campground was on the other side of the river so we had to take the free ferry across the Yukon River each day - the bare patch on the hill to the right is Moosehide Slide, a prehistoric landslide.
Permafrost melting casualties
We took a walking tour. This is the Bank of Commerce - operated until 1989. All wood and clad in tin to retard fire - decorative details on the front are all tin
Inside the BNA bank
Back room where gold was assayed
The white center building was Ruby's Place a brothel until 1961
Pocket scale for weighing gold
Building on the right was built as a free public library by Andrew Carnegie. Designed and clad by the same architect as the Bank of Commerce building. It is now a Masonic Temple. Bright building beside it is the new library and school building
Originally the hall for the Arctic
Brotherhood, a fraternal organization formed by
11 intoxicated men on a ship heading north to Skagway,
Alaska. They decided that the organization’s badges
would be champagne and beer corks. Now a casino and Cancan dancing show
These beautiful grasses are everywhere along roads in the Yukon
I love the slumping "lead" in these windows
Recreated Palace Grand Theater
Post Office
How the mail was delivered
Sternwheel paddle steamer
Building on the main drag
Bizarre challenge here is to drink this shot of whiskey with a preserved human toe in it - the toe has to touch your lips - we didn't imbibe
While they tout the old here, they are very up to date
