July 12 & 13 Finishing the Dempster Hwy and Bonanza Creek
Awoke to awesome fog rolling in
Lots of bike riders on the road - turns out they were fully supported biking from Tukoyatuk, NWT to Cape Horn, Chile - what an epic 6 month, $25,000 trip - I want to be their support crew!
Views we didn't see through the smoke days ago
Happily eating pond plants
Tailings from gold mining - for miles all along the road heading into Dawson City
Views of the mighty Yukon River and Dawson City from Midnight Dome - where many go to watch the midnight sun
Spent the night in our first paid site this trip - Yukon River Provincial Park Campground, which came to about $28 for 2 nights. Turns out we could have camped for free in town, but I was fighting a sinus infection and couldn't find anything that said that was ok. Did laundry the next morning then drove to Bonanza Creek, center of the Klondike Gold Rush.
Dredge #4 - the largest in North America
Bucket line
More tailings
The Chilkoot Pass - the usual route to the Klondike. In order to survive in the frontier, Canadian officials required each person have a ton of goods with them - half as a year's worth of food, and the other half equipment. Unless you were rich, you had to carry your belongings up this pass, usually 50 - 60 lbs at a time.
Matthew tries his hand at panning
Luckily we weren't depending on our finds
In case you want to try your hand at it
