Haines, Alaska

 9/7- 9-10 Haines, Alaska - Tlingit Lands

Eagle at the marina
Murals

Quenching our thirst at Haines Brewery
Hops growing on their fence

Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site - we are here to see the grizzly bears eat at the weir
And aren't disappointed
There was this sow and her three yearlings

This Deer Rock was used as the site of peace negotiations between warring tribes. Originally 6 feet tall, it was blown up during construction of the road. The Tlingit's protested and the pieces were reassembled here.
Another sow, this one much too accustomed to people, and her 2 cubs

She brought fish over for the cubs to eat on land - you should have heard the two of them squabbling over it
Saw another sow with her trio of cubs before we left and settled in on a pullout along the Chilkoot Inlet
Was a blustery night as a storm blew in. We went back to the weir in the morning for more entertainment

Drove along the residential area at the end of Lukat Inlet

Landslides are ubiquitous around here - how tragic for this landowner

While looking at the fisherfolk this little guy popped up
Turns out there were five of them that came into the river to eat
Cruise ship day - it dwarfs the town
While I got caught up at the library Matthew went to the Hammer Museum (which he says was much better than you would initially think) and wandered the town

Chose a more sheltered spot for the night and, since it was only 52 degrees out in the morning and we couldn't be seen from the road, we took showers outside before heading into town.
We drove through Old Fort Seward, which is now private residences and an artist colony

And drove down the Chilkat Inlet side where we hiked a bit on a cool, spooky trail in the state park

and saw the Rainbow Glacier at the end

Filled up our water jugs from the same source that the locals on this peninsula do

Found a quiet, sheltered from the wind spot to pull off for the night.
Passed this old cemetery on the outskirts of Haines as we left town the next morning
And this fishwheel to catch salmon
